  Robert glanced down at Tyler. The boy nodded.

  Seconds passed. Minutes passed. They no longer needed to stay in the cellar.

  Robert leading the way, they hurried up the cellar stairs, and when the door was no longer bolted and locked, Robert swung it open. They found Tyler’s dirty old bear lying on the floor, clean and new looking.

  “Yay!” yelled Tyler and grabbed and hugged the bear.

  “You know, guys,” said Danielle, “while I was walking up the stairs, I had the strangest images in my mind, of the girl greeting us up here, all dressed up nicely in white and smiling.”

  “Yes, so did I,” said Robert and grinned. “I saw that, too.”

  But where was the ghost? Was she really gone?

  “Maybe it’s a trick?” Tyler asked.

  “A part of her will always live … up there.”

  Robert Matthews picked up his son and hugged him.

  Danielle had the picture in her hands, and inspected it thoughtfully.

  “I’ll have it enlarged, and framed, and I’ll do a little research.”

  She turned to Robert and added:

  “Or should we burn it?”

  Tyler answered: “We can hang it up in the small room upstairs. And she can have the bear.”

  They nodded in agreement, and a feeling of peace washed over them.

  Later, when Tyler had been tucked in and the groceries and clothes had been unpacked and were back where they belonged, Robert sat watching TV with a bottle of beer, his shirt unbuttoned. Danielle was scrubbing her hands in the bathroom sink, and when she looked up, glancing briefly into the mirror, she saw two or three drops of blood leaking out of the corners of her mouth …
