  The first time he had seen the shadows he had been in first grade. His mom had told him to brush his teeth and check. He had grinned into the mirror, but it was too high up.

  He then took Mom’s smaller hand mirror, and a face he didn’t know grinned right back at him. Dylan had stared at it for many minutes before he realized the face was somewhat familiar, but not his, although some of the features were … his. He hadn’t slept that night, horrified and in a prolonged panic.

  Something was wrong with the world. It didn’t obey the rules that were taught in school. Especially mirrors - they opened up into places only Dylan and his mother knew existed.
